The holiday season is right around the corner — which means it’s time for cozy gatherings, festive meals, and plenty of time spent around the dining table. Whether you’re hosting a small dinner with close friends or a big family feast, the right table size can make all the difference in both comfort and flow.

As designers, we’re often asked: How many people can comfortably fit around a dining table? The answer depends on the size and shape of your table AND how much space you have to work with.

Below, we’re breaking down our go-to guidelines for choosing the perfect table size and ensuring every guest (even the unexpected ones!) has a seat.

Rectangular Dining Tables

Rectangular tables are classic and versatile, perfect for both formal dining rooms and open-concept spaces.

• 6–7 ft tables → Seat 6 comfortably.Designer tip: If you have a 7 ft table, you can easily slide in two extra chairs when last-minute guests arrive.

• 8 ft tables → Seat 8 comfortably, and like the 7 ft, offer flexibility for adding a couple of extra chairs when needed.

Round Dining Tables

Round tables are a wonderful choice for creating an intimate, conversational dining experience. They also work beautifully in smaller rooms or square dining areas.

How Much Space Should You Leave Around Your Table?

No matter the shape or size, it’s important to ensure your table fits comfortably within your dining area. A good rule of thumb is to allow at least 36"–42" of clearance between the edge of the table and any surrounding walls or furniture.

This ensures guests can easily pull out chairs and move around, even when the room is full — so your gatherings feel relaxed, not cramped.
