How to Build a Gallery Wall That Tells Your Story 🖼️

One of our favorite ways to add instant personality and style to a space? A thoughtfully curated gallery wall.

Whether we’re designing a cozy living room, a serene bedroom, or a welcoming hallway, gallery walls are our go-to for telling a story through art, photos, and collected treasures. It’s one of those design moments that looks high-impact but is surprisingly easy to pull together with a little planning and creativity.

Here’s our step-by-step guide to creating a gallery wall you’ll love for years to come:

A mix of family photos and some collected travel souvenirs help make a statement in this gallery wall

🖼️ 1. Start with the Layout

Before anything goes on the wall, measure your space and map out your layout on the floor. This helps you visualize the composition and play around with scale and spacing.

You can go for:

✔️ A clean, symmetrical grid for a modern, polished look

✔️ A more organic, offset arrangement for a relaxed, collected feel

Design tip: Start with your largest piece slightly off-center, then build around it for natural movement.

🖼️ 2. Mix It Up

In this gallery wall project we focused on years of our client's collected artwork, adding a few of our go-to inexpensive frames from Target

Gallery walls shine when they feel curated and layered, not too matchy-matchy. Use a mix of frame styles to bring texture and contrast:

  • Modern black or metallic frames for a sleek, contemporary vibe

  • Vintage or wood frames for warmth and character

This mix adds visual interest and keeps the wall feeling dynamic.

No wasted space - by adding a gallery wall up the stairwell, the character of the home continues and flows seamlessly through every space

🖼️ 3. Blend Old + New

Some of the best gallery walls we’ve created include a mix of meaningful pieces our clients already owned. Family photos or travel mementos, alongside new art that complements their style.

Add in:

🖼️ Framed prints or paintings

🌿 A small hanging plant or object for dimension

🎨 Budget-friendly prints (we love downloading digital art from Etsy and printing locally!)

Gallery wall in progress - during install we mapped out spacing and frame arrangement while the client made their final decisions on artwork and photos. This allowed us to work out spacing and hanging and them to have time to curate their selections. Again using our go-to Target frames.

🖼️ 4. Keep It Personal

At Salted Hue, we believe your home should reflect you. Gallery walls are the perfect place to showcase what matters most. Whether that’s your favorite people, places, or pieces of art that remind you of a favorite memory.

The beauty of a gallery wall is that there are no hard rules. It’s about creating a story through art, texture, and moments that matter. So have fun with it, trust your eye, and let your wall evolve over time.

Think beyond just aesthetics and always aim to create a wall that feels like home.
